i'm starting to remember what all this stuff is. this is part of a glass bowl artefact (ca 1880-1933) that was found near LA's Union Station. lots of other cool stuff mostly having to deal with Southern CA in USC's digital archive.

stereograph, Devil's Canyon geysers, 1867

to view the stereograph without a stereoscope, cross your eyes while looking at the image. slowly relax them until the two images slide together, giving you a 3-D image. subjects are photographed by two cameras 2-2.5" apart, the approximate distance between a person's pupils.
